Chuck the Wood
Our earth is a living breathing planet. Some of the world’s largest oxygen generators – Trees and plants located in the dense forests found in South America, rainforests of Africa and the taiga belt around the world, supports the rest of the animal species which live on earth.
This is the same wood which is depleting due to multiple needs of the human species as well as raising temperatures due to global warming. While the tree cover is reducing by the day as we speak, we are running the risk of having more greenhouse gases in our atmosphere which otherwise could have been reduced if we had planted more trees and saved more by following the Reduce, reuse and recycle policy.
Having thrown light on the importance of trees and the usefulness of wood since our early times on earth, there are many ways we can make a change, one of the smallest and easiest of which is what we are discussing below:
Looking at its sharpness one imagines he can rule the world. The starting point of many creations is jotted using this instrument. The pencil… one of the most required and versatile stationery items has a deep-rooted history in every living being’s life. Reader, don’t double check what you read. Yes, I said every living being. Not only has this little instrument with an average diameter of 6mm been a deep-rooted culture for every human but all the other living beings on this Earth. Confused? Little does one know about the lakhs and lakhs of trees that have been destroyed that is used in creating this important stationery. The history of the pencil dates all the way back to the 1500s. From then on, the world fell into a deep fathomless pit of habitat destruction and deforestation. The sad part? People are oblivious.
Many of us consider liking an Instagram post of a forest burning; as our wholehearted contribution to the saving of the Earth. There are another group of people who advice others on how to save the earth and make the world a more beautiful place, while not even remotely putting into action their words of wisdom. While, spreading awareness of a social issue is the first step of any revolutionary change, getting stuck in this step is a notorious trap that one should avoid.
Dear Reader, in no manner whatsoever am I accusing you of wasting wood. The pencil is a required stationery item. What I am asking you to do though is to chuck the wood entirely. How? You may ask, well the triple R’s is the answer. Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, the three words anyone relates to when sustainability is the topic of the hour. Instead of purchasing wooden pencils, why not change to recycled paper pencils. This reduces the wood that is used to make the pencils drastically and it reuses paper for a totally new purpose.
This concept has today, not only been implemented by businesses as it has taken a keen interest in this process. An example of this is Ecoworkx a company found in India. Ecoworkx have now been effectively leveraging the power of the internet to bring eco-friendly products to people and also run campaigns to educate how eco-friendly stationery can be an alternative thereby saving trees and the green cover which we are already losing due to the global impact of global warming and deforestation. These businesses have made innovative products such as Plantable Pencils where pencils made of recycled paper containing seeds can be planted which with proper care flower and fruit in the future. The recycled paper-based pencils boast of having unbreakable leads, and are stronger than the normal wooden pencils. This innovation allows customers to feel a sense of accomplishment as they would be directly helping the world.
So, next time you buy a pack of ten pencils, think, think about the damage that those ten pencils created on the green space of the world in order to land on that shelf in that shop. Make a conscious decision and Chuck the Wood!
